Upgrading IPhone 3.0 to 3.1.3

Last night I finally upgraded my iPhone 3G to 3.1.3 from 3.0. Though I had done iPhone unlocking many times for now, but this time the new SHSH validation by apple made the issue a little complicated. Though after some research and help by hackers, it turned out to be the same good old process. I thought of sharing the complete process as a token of thanks to the iPhone-hacking community. Here it is:

Firstly, for 3G you don't need SHSH from iOS version < 4.0. So all is well :).

0. Backing Up (Sync) Your iPhone.

The first step is to back up (sync) your stuff to iTunes. iTunes 8.2 of higher is required. You can download the latest iTunes from here: http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Simply connect your iphone to your computer and open iTunes. In iTunes, on the left side, there's a Devices tab, and the name of you iPhone is listed under it.

Click your iPhone's name. On the right side, you should see Summary, Info, Ringtones, Music...etc. If iTunes says you're not using the right sim card, you can turn on Airplane Mode, which temporarily shuts off sim card and you can continue to the next steps. To turn on Airplane Mode on your iPhone, you can go to:

Settings --> General --> Airplane Mode, and turn it to ON

Now you will be able to see Summary, Info, Ringtones, Music...etc in your iTunes.

In Info tab -> Contacts, you may see "sync contacts with...outlook", etc, please check this box, and please check similar boxes for your calenders, mail accounts, web browser.

Under Advanced, please do NOT check these boxes.

You can go to Ringtones, Music, Photos, Podcasts, Videos, Applications tabs, and check them as well, if you would like to back up them. Then you can hit the Apply button once you are done, and it will start the backup (sync) process.

Once it is completed, your iPhone has been successfully backed up on your computer. Now that you have backed up your iPhone, we can move to the next step.

1. Download appropriate iPhone firmware from this page: http://www.theiphonewiki.com/wiki/index.php?title=Firmware#iPhone_3G

2. Open iTunes.

3. Connect iPhone to computer using USB cable.

4. In iPhone summary tab, hold down your shift button on keyboard and click Restore button.

5. A window will appear to browse the iPhone software file (*.ipsw file). Select the iPhone Firmware/Software/OS that you have downloaded in step number one.

6. Please wait until the restoring process is complete.

7. Once your iPhone has been restored, you will see this message.

Your iPhone has been restored to factory settings, and is restarting. Please leave your iPhone connected. It will appear in the iTunes windows after it restarts.

8. Now you can use redsn0w to jailbreak it and activate it at the same time.

9. redsn0w 0.9.4 can be used to jailbreak 3.1.3. However, please also have 3.1.2 firmware in your computer, and when redsn0w asks for the firmware, point to 3.1.2 instead of 3.1.3.
You can download redsn0w here:
http://jailbreak-me.info/jailbreak-and-unlock-wizard.html .

10. Now press the Home button then power off and power on the iPhone. You do this by holding down the power button for 3 seconds then moving the power slider that appears to the right. Press the power button again to turn on the phone.

11. You should now be able to insert the SIM of your choice!
Your iPhone 3G now has been unlocked, you can turn 3G back on and you can sync your iPhone back with your contacts, songs, etc, and it's ready to go.

Choosing the Correct Job

Sometimes back, when I was confused between the job offers I had, a friend of mine (Radhika Mohta) suggested me the following parameters that brought some clarity to me. Putting them up here so as to make them "Googleable".

Application of your existing skill set, learning offered from the profile, work environment, career growth, package (variable component of the package to be considered too), where do you want to see yourself 2 years down the line, will it help in you further studies/ next job....

Hope that it helps someone :)

Deserve Before You Desire

Recently got an interesting article over email. Wanted to "bookmark" it for future. So putting it on my blog.

Mr.Gopalakrishnan succeeds Mr.Ratan Tata as Chairman of Tata Sons Ltd.,the holding company for many of the Tata Bluechips like Tata Steel, Tata Motors,Tata Power,Tata Chemicals,Voltas, etc. Possibly he is the first non-Tata person to head the Tata Empire. The below article written by him is really interesting!

The Grass isn't Always Greener On The Other Side

Move from one job to another, but only for the right reasons. It's yet another day at office. As I logged on to the marketing and advertising sites for the latest updates,as usual,I found the headlines dominated by 'who's moving from one company to another after a short stint, and I wondered, why are so many people leaving one job
for another?

Is it pass now to work with just one company for a sufficiently long period? Whenever I ask this question to people who leave a company, the answers I get are: "Oh, I am getting a 200% hike in salary"; "Well, I am jumping three levels in my designation"; "Well, they are going to send me abroad in six months".

Then,I look around at all the people who are considered successful today and who have reached the top - be it a media agency,an advertising agency or a company.I find that most of these people are the ones who have stuck to the company, ground their heels and worked their way to the top. And,as I look around for people who changed their jobs constantly,I find they have stagnated at some level,in obscurity!
In this absolutely ruthless, dynamic and competitive environment, there are still no short cuts to success or to making money. The only thing that continues to pay,as earlier,is loyalty and hard work.Yes, it pays!Sometimes, immediately, sometimes after a lot of time. But,it does pay.

Does this mean that one should stick to an organisation and wait for that golden moment? Of course not. After a long stint, there always comes a time for moving in most organisations, but it is important to move for the right reasons, rather than superficial ones, like money, designation or an overseas trip.

Remember,no company recruits for charity.More often than not, when you are offered an unseemly hike in salary or designation that is disproportionate to what that company offers it current employees, there is always unseen bait attached. The result? You will,in the long-term, have reached exactly the same levels or maybe lower levels than what you would have in your current company.

A lot of people leave an organisation because they are "unhappy".What is this so-called-unhappiness? I have been working for donkey's years and there has never been a day when I am not unhappy about something in my work environment-boss,rude colleague, fussy clients etc.

Unhappiness in a workplace,to a large extent,is transient. If you look hard enough, there is always something to be unhappy about. But,more importantly; do I come to work to be "happy" in the truest sense? If I think hard, the answer is "No".
Happiness is something you find with family, friends, may be a close circle of colleagues who have become friends. What you come to work for is to earn, build a reputation, satisfy your ambitions,be appreciated for your work ethics, face challenges and get the job done. So,the next time you are tempted to move, ask yourself why are you moving and what are you moving into?

Some questions are:
* Am I ready and capable of handling the new responsibility? If yes, what could be the possible reasons my current company has not offered me the same responsibility?

* Who are the people who currently handle this responsibility in the current and new company? Am I as good as the best among them?

* As the new job offer has a different profile, why have I not given the current company the option to offer me this profile?

* Why is the new company offering me the job? Do they want me for my skills,or is there an ulterior motive?

An honest answer to these will eventually decide where you go in your career- to the top of the pile in the long term (at the cost of short-term blips) or to become another average employee who gets lost with time in the wilderness?

DESERVE BEFORE YOU DESIRE,
Dr. Gopalkrishnan,
Chairman TATA Sons.

Invictus

"Invictus" is a short poem by the English poet William Ernest Henley. It is one of my favourite.

The poem comes straight from Henley's heart and tells about his indomitable spirit. At the age of 12, Henley became a victim of tuberculosis of the bone. A few years later the disease progressed to his foot, and finally his one leg was amputated. "Invictus" was written while he was in hospital.

Here it goes:
Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

My dream is to fly...

This is among one of the most favourite pic of myself. Not that I am looking terrifically smart or something, but because of the expressions it conveys. I find the song "Rise up" by Yves Larock quite close to what I feel whenever I see this. The video is crappy, but lyrics are just perfect. Enjoy the lyrics:

My dream is to fly
Over the rainbow so high

My dream is to fly
Over the rainbow so high

My dream is to fly
Over the rainbow so high

eh.. eh.. eh..
over the rainbow so high.

My dream is to fly
Over the rainbow so high (x4)

Rise Up
don't falling down again

Rise Up
long time I broke the chains.

I try to fly a while so high
direction's sky

I try to fly a while so high
direction's sky

My dream is to fly
Over the rainbow so high (x4)
